About

This little weblog serves two purposes: First, I want to have a live environment to test the new version of Pivot, as it progresses. Secondly, I needed a place to log about stuff i don't want to bother the readers of my regular weblog with, like news about PHP, browsers, CSS, weblog-tools, webdesign and the like.

+ 0 - 0 | § Internet Explorer won't start in Windows 98

I'm trying to compile links to all the stuff that I find useful and things that people ask so I don't have to look them up again. This link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q296211 is to an article on the Microsoft support site that tells you how you can get past a corrupt GUI (specifically corrupt IE) with Windows 98 and extract the required files to allow it to boot again. The problem in this case was that boot-up would not work in normal or safe mode; and would return a page fault after stating that ole32.dll was corrupt or missing. (more)

+ 0 - 0 | § Government Pain Ray

So I read this post on Slashdot entitled: Riot Control Ray-Gun for Use in Iraq and I've really got nothing more to add. I'm just going to quote the bit from the Slashdot headline:

It was recently tested on people playing the part of rioters at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico where they asked the subjects to remove glass and contact lenses to protect their eyes. Hopefully real rioters will get the same courtesy. Police and the Marines are working on portable versions.

+ 0 - 0 | § Wooden Computer Case

From the I-Want-it-But-Will-Never-Buy-It department; http://shop.webopolis.com is carrying the wooden computer case and keyboard that must be seen. They also carry a wooden 32 inch LCD TV. Sadly, with the 19 inch glorious monitor (in sapale wood; whatever that is) coming in at $850 it is out of my price range. Maybe I'll do my own version with popsicle sticks and Elmer's 'Glue All'.

+ 0 - 0 | § More Evil DRM - from Intel this time

From a Slashdot article come this story about how Intel is to cut Linux out of the content market. It's painful to even read the article, let alone wait for the results. I'm a true Intel fanboy; but this may make me jump ship for the AMD bandwagon. Actually; I think it's time I tried AMD. Back on the subject of DRM - combine this news article with the one on how Longhorn will require DRM capable Monitors or else it will scale down your content and you have a rather frightening soup of DRM. Really; if you buy something wouldn't it be nice to know that you could use it the way you wanted to rather than the way Microsoft wants you to? Or worse - if you create something wouldn't you like to be able to know you could use your own content the way that you want to; rather than the way Microsoft wants you to?

+ 0 - 1 | § More on Pivot

I'm still pretty happy with the Pivot tool I'm using for this site. It's pretty lightweight and fairly easy to use. I've had trouble with the comment spm; and I've had to use the Pivot Blacklist which seems fairly powerful. I hope it does the trick the way I have it set up now; if not I shall have to add a more extreme method of requiring that a question be answered that a spam-bot would likely miss. What a pain. + 0 - 0 | § Word won't maximize! ..and the fix

Yes, this make sense. Microsoft Word won't maximize. So open Outlook and deselct Microsoft Word as the editor. I've seen this happen on various desktops for no apparent reason. Google provided the answer in 0.33 seconds; but really. I got the answer from this specific link for anyone intersted and here is the Google Search I used.
